Project statement:

My project highlights traditional patterns from three cultures, intertwined into the braided hair of the central figure as a symbol of unconditional care and love. The patterns in the background also represent the three cultures I had the opportunity to work with throughout this project.
To represent my own heritage, I used Norwegian patterns because my father is from Norway. I intended for the typography to feel fluid and full of motion, almost like water, symbolizing how women can feel free, alive, and supported when they are surrounded by other women.

Self-reflection on the collaborative experience
During the collaborative process and while watching the other professors’ lectures, I learned that intricate designs and a maximalist visual approach are central to many of the cultures we studied. One of my group members focused mainly on braided hair, explaining how it is more than just hair; it is an act of love shared with others and a reflection of community, care, and culture.
Although communication within the group could have been stronger, I was still able to learn from my peers and engage in meaningful conversations. These exchanges helped me develop a poster that connects to our chosen topic of the feminine gaze.
