Project Statement
As a group, we decided on the topic, “The Feminine Gaze”. The origins of the term, “The Male Gaze,” came from movies, so we decided to focus on actresses and characters that were affected by the male gaze. In my case, I focused on the actress Megan Fox. Her roles in Transformers, 2007, and Jennifer’s Body, 2009, served as examples of how the camera follows the actress in a male oriented film, versus a female oriented film.
The poster is not a one to one portrait of the actress, but I kept her in the back of my mind while sketching. I wanted to give agency to the figure by letting her wield the camera, pointing it away from herself and towards the audience. My goal was to remind the audience of the role they play in the “Gaze”. I’m trying to confront the audience's parasocial relationship to the figure, you are here, but so is she. And she can see you too.
